Intro

“A friend’s half-serious note spurred us to abandon our careers and risk our family’s fortune on a preposterous idea.”   –Bernie

The most successful people are driven by their defining moments. So says our guest today Bernie Swain. He is co-founder and chairman of one of the most powerful agencies in the world, The Washington Speaker’s Bureau. His client list includes presidents, dignitaries, celebs and sports heros. Sometimes behind the scenes but always leading the pack. Welcome Bernie to the Nice Guys.

What a cool collection of awesome you have put together...you’ve got to be happy with this?

You originally called the Agency a preposterous idea. So crazy in fact, it had to work or you would lose everything. Tell me more.

3 presidents, 4 prime ministers 5 secretaries of state...but Bernie, no Nice Guys podcast hosts, I must have missed the invitation to contribute.

Can you share some of your why for a moment. You are one of the most successful entrepreneurs of our day. It’s not about the money, at least I don’t think it is, your credit score is looking pretty good. What is it about?

Share with our community a story in your book that inspires you most. I know there are many, but is there one that stands out for you?

What’s it like to sign a president, did you keep the pen? Who was your first president, Reagan right? That must have changed your life. Talk about instant fame.

What do you want people to remember your for Bernie? What Made Me Who I Am

Ep. 199: Happily Ever.... Always or Never? Relationship Expert Dr. Karin Interviewed

Get email updates from The Nice Guys

Doug- @DJDoug

Strickland- @NiceGuyonBiz

Dr. Karin - @DrKarinAnderson

Dr. Karin Anderson Abrell holds a master's degree in clinical psychology and a doctorate in developmental psychology.  She spent the early portion of her career as a psychotherapist for children in Chicago's child welfare system and then stepped into academia for ten years.  As a professor, she delivered a number of well-received presentations at national and international psychology conferences, covering issues such as identity development and family dynamics.

Despite these credentials, she's no stuffy academic peering down from the Ivory Tower. She get's into it with Doug on today's episode.

Intro

  • Do nice guys finish first?
    • In love, yes
  • You have got to be you
  • Dating losers is part of the journey
    • Don’t be so worried about how you are dating, just date, be present and learn

CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is the Shit

  • We are telling ourselves things all day everyday, and our thoughts are linked to our emotions and ultimately our behavior
  • Changing our mindset takes some work
    • It is like a muscles, you have got to exercise
  • It is never too late for love
  • At the end of anyone’s life, the connections with other are the most meaningful things
    • Personal relationships affect business relationships and vice versa
  • The frustration from singles in this generation is that they feel very disposable
    • Swipe left, swipe right etc.
  • If someone didn’t give you a chance, they are not meant for you
    • Don’t take it as a rejection but rather a dodged bullet (i.e. mental shift)

Happily Ever… What?

  • You have to be willing to wait and experience the tension of being alone
    • Your alone time or lonely moments are preparing you for a stronger, more long-lasting happily ever after
  • The relationships that tend to be the strongest are those that enjoy their independent time
  • There is a difference between comprising and lowering your standards
  • Individuate yourself from your parents
    • You can love your mother but not do everything she tells you to do
    • You can assure your parents that you are “Ok”
  • If you are married and mentally single, there is a problem with that
    • There is a difference between being independent and having a ‘single’ mentality
  • There is no scorecard in a marriage

Ep. 191: Get ahead by being lazy with Laurence Shorter

Doug- @DJDoug

Strickland- @NiceGuyonBiz

Laurence @TheLazyGuru

The Lazy Guru: A Half-American Scot Who Lives in England

  • Stress can be created in any moment
  • The moment where all stress dissipates, where there are no problems/pressures…. never ever arrives
  • Life is going to continue to be complex, difficult and unpredictable so you might as well just relax right now
  • As some point, the ‘balance’ achieved during meditation has to become a continuous state
  • This is as much about enjoyment of stress as it is avoiding stress
    • Stress does not ever go away, you just have to learn to manage it
  • Everyone has a Survival mechanism that has 2 states:
    • A hyper-engaged state/hyper alpha state of fighting stress
    • An “in-denial” state

Action Steps

  • Often when we are selling something, we feel that we have to ‘push’ something
  • ‘Push’ ourselves
  • “Push’ our product
  • BUT THAT IS THE OPPOSITE OF AN Effective SALES TECHNIQUE
  • We often do things that we think we need to do because we have been told that that is a good thing to do
  • When you are really into something and can add value you to it, the money will follow
  • Do not focus on your agenda in a conversation, just let the conversation go where it is going to go.
    • Let go of your expectations in a conversation

The Heart of the Lazy Guru - Making Space

  • People who are genuinely creative have a whole bunch of practices that people who uncreative people can benefit from massively
  • Creating space for something magical to happen is something that we all need to do
    • Creativity and spirit is essential for an entrepreneur
  • Making space is the discipline of carving out little spaces of time, daily, to do nothing
    • Most of us have a bunch of mind talk that gets in the way - it is chock full of concern and anxieties
    • Try to listen to them, not talk to them
  • Things will happen to you naturally in a way that will surprise you

Ep. 187: Russians, Strick’s Routine Meditation, and Sunny sneaks one in

Doug- @DJDoug

Strickland- @NiceGuyonBiz

Sunny Lake sneaks her "Sunny Side Up" business minute in at the last minute (at least SOMEBODY is giving business advice this episode!)

  • Russia and their doping athletes
    • 119 athletes were found to be faking drug tests
    • International Paralympics bans Russia
    • Sports that weren't banned: Badminton, table tennis, volleyball, golf and handball
      • What example is this setting for the kids?
      • Downside: National disgrace, millions of billions down the drain and setting a horrible example for the younger generation

How to Avoid "Overwhelmed"

  • Break it down into chunks and prioritize those chunks
    • Completely hone in on those top 5 chunks and GET THEM DONE
    • Then focus on the next 5 and the next
    • Keep the Schedule
  • Strick's Morning Routine
    • During the school year, Strick is up at 6 am and the girls are out of the house by 7 am
    • Strick has committed to do a 10 minute morning meditation and morning Yoga stretches
    • Strick needs to watch less television
  • Look at what you have to accomplish in the next 30 days and work backwards from that
    • Don't get sucked into the whirlwind of shit that other people have going on
    • Base your schedule on the things that are important in your life
  • When you stick to a routine, you are saving energy!
    • Every decision uses some brain power
  • Try some meditation (just 10 minutes) for a week, see firsthand the results
    • Meditation can help clear the "overwhelming schedule" fog
  • What's done, it's done
    • Our priorities change when we get older, and there is nothing wrong with that

Welcome to The Nice Guys, Anna Nygren, Production Assistant

Welcome to The Nice Guys, Anna Nygren, Production Assistant

  • Intro and Beginning
    • Doug - “His critics say that even Lee brings order to chaos in the business world.”
    • Lee - "We try to take concepts that leaders and entrepreneurs deal with on a day in and day out basis and translate concepts into actionable steps they could take."
    • "You really can't measure and manage a concept."
    • "We consider ourselves the ‘how-to’ consulting firm."
  • Q & A
    • Doug - “While all of that sounds like a great elevator speech…. what the fuck does that mean? What can I get out of what your company does?”
      • “Our niche is really helping people execute and implement concepts versus just kind of talk about them, we don't kind of ‘hand off a deck.’ ”
    • Adherence Equation
      • “We have a simple model on execution, we call it the adherence equation which says,
        • Your focus * Your competence * Your passion = Your ability to execute your plans
        • Your focus is about the "what" - what do you do, what do you not do?
        • Competence is about the "how" - so it's not just your skills, it's your processes, your metrics, your systems, your language
        • Passion is about the why: it is all about the connections that you are making with yourself, with the bigger purpose”
      • “What is the single thing that is most important to you…and how do you focus on that?”
  • Self-Knowledge
    • “The most important form of knowledge is self-knowledge
      • None of us have all the gifts it takes to run a business
      • "Living in your sweet spot" - That intersection of what you're naturally gifted at where your interests lie.
      • One of the primary objectives ought to be spending most of your time in things that you love doing”
    • “The more time you can spend in your gifted area, the more your business is going to flourish”
    • “A lot of people have that awareness but then still don't execute well”
  • The Knowing-Doing Gap
    • Doug - "I'm coming to the realization that there is a difference between the psychology of understanding what you are and who you are and the execution of actually putting stuff together."
      • Lee - “Yes, the knowing doing gap.”
    • Doug - “There is a difference between what you know and what you do. But is it really that simple?”
      • "It takes daily disciplines and that is where people fall."
      • “ You're "why" has to be bigger than any "but" ”
  • Action Item
    • One Thing - "What is the single thing, the one thing that is most important to you by the end of the year?”
      • “The one thing is defined as even if a lot of other stuff doesn't get done, your year is still a victory.
      • Here is the other side of the definition though… if you don't get that one thing done and still get lots of other stuff done, your year is a failure
      • You have to know, when to say no”
    • Tyranny of the Urgent:
      • “We have this illusion, this perception that things that are in our face - a text message, an e-mail, a meeting - appear to be more urgent but in fact they are not.”
    • “Do it, dump it, delegate it or defer it”
  • How to Find Your One Thing
    • “It really is about stepping back.. What do you want your life to look like? And then build your business vision around that”
  • Most Important Question
    • "The most important question that often times entrepreneurs forget to answer is, 'What is the economic model?' 'Is there a real viable market for this and how is this going to sustain my life?' ”
    • “95% of small businesses are done in a year, they're out… they do not have a financial or business plan”
    • “I manage my own attitude and plant the seeds of success on my own mind.”
  • Doug - “How successful are you at getting people out of this stuck-point.. The shittiest place that a business can be in?”
    • The biggest challenge is focus
    • Entrepreneurs are naturally attracted to the different shinny objects - the next opportunity, the next business deal
  • Doug - "It is not just about the business, it is about what you want."
  • Winners Always Quit
    • “We get stuck in our approaches to get there.. ‘I want to stay in my comfort zone.’
    • You stay focused on your goal, you don't quit that… but along the way you might have to quit lots of different methods to be able to get there.
    • If it is not working, I don't see just giving up on the goal… but we have to be very quick to quit our methods.”
  • Doug - "Successful people, motivated people, are they born? Or can you make someone be successful or motivated?”
    • “No matter who we are, we all have a natural gift at some point. If we just let that be, let it sit in a stagnant state, we are not going to be successful.
    • It is 2 components - it is finding your natural giftedness but then honing it.
    • Find where the person is naturally gifted and double down there.”
  • Closing Statements
    • “To me, the definition of nice is getting outside of yourself and finding a way to serve others”
    • “Our goal is to just help you elevate your leadership. Leaders are learners.”

Doug- @DJDoug

Strickland- @NiceGuyonBiz

Today’s show will be a life saver...we are going to talk about everything alive and dead. Dr Shirley famed mind-body therapist, media personality, author. She can help you Go from being a passive victim of your past to an active creator of your future, no matter where you are coming from.

- What are your triggers?

- How do people break out of their scripts...is there a script?

- Nothing seems to be off limits to you, life and death. You even work with a medium, how does that fit into today’s world?

- Let’s talk about success and failure. How in control of it are we?

- Do you ever feel like life is nothing more than a “show”?

Ep. 172: E-Mail MUST-dos, Doug loves our National Parks (Strick hates them), eating a bison, some federal employees that suck, and Doug almost gets stuck in Canada. The CIA is watching Strick!

Doug -  @djdoug

Strickland- @NiceGuyonBiz

Just shy of an hours worth of Email tips, Secret Service flags, rants on federal employees, trusting the president, bison, tunas, Trump, Doug tours 3 National Parks and Strickland wants to turn them all into sawmills (not really) Hear all about it on The Nice Guys today.

Go to Nice Guy Community sign-up and we'll send you the free E-Book "The 5 biggest (relationship) mistakes in business" AND be one of the first 100 people to sign up for the Nice Guys Community to get an invite to our first (to be scheduled) live podcast.

Go to Overcast and please click "Recommend" for every episode you listen to (and the ones you don't for that matter) because we want to overtake NPR and Tim Ferris in the Podcast rankings. Let's show those slackers who really runs this podcast thing.

- Canada lets Doug in, but getting back into the U.S. was not so easy.

Which weighs more- a ton of bricks, a ton of feathers, or a ton of E-mails?

E-Mail Etiquette:

Reply quickly and clearly.

Keep Emails to 2-3 sentences.

Keep subject lines to 3 words.

If you ramble on (like Doug and I tend to do) your E-Mail will not get read.

- Add video and links to keep Emails shorter

So….Back to the National Parks, and you have to get 44:30 into the podcast before we really go off the rails.

Strick would rather be in Vegas (or just about anywhere else) on vacation.

Doug digs on federal employees and Strickland triggers the CIA to download the show.

We want to hear from any Trump supporters to hear why you support him.

Shout out to http://www.centauruscomputers.com/ for a great Email and great customer service.

Strick wants to get rid of the National Parks and hates animals (not really).

The Science of Influence and How To Make it Work for You. Dr. Carmen Simon

Doug on Twitter @djdoug

Strick on Twitter @niceguyonbiz

Dr. Carmen Simon on Twitter @areyoumemorable

Entrepreneurs survive in business if and only if clients remember them. Dr. Carmen Simon is the author of Impossible to Ignore, Creating Memorable Content to Influence Decisions, hear more about that on Then Nice Guys today.

She's been coaching employees from visible brands to use brain science guidelines in their messaging. Memory is at the root of all decision-making and because the amount of information around us is increasingly abundant, it will become harder for people to remember what's what and make favorable decisions.

Here are some of the questions Dr. Simon answers today:

- What's the differences between influence and manipulation?

-What are the biggest insights from memory research that we can use to thrive in business?

-Why is it more important to influence other people’s memory than working on your own?

-What are some techniques to use when creating content that stays on people’s minds?

- How does the brain make decisions?

If someone remembers you, will that memory live forever?

-If someone remembers you negatively, are you doomed?
